Mmm, That Feels Right

Try it out. Say it to yourself. Say it out loud. A few times. “Mmm. That feels right.” There are times when we feel out of sorts, in a bad groove, or off center. But these words remind us of better days. Yeah, mmm, that feels right.

Better days are when we feel that everything is perfectly aligned. We’re clear about our goals and tasks to complete. We make moves that get us closer to them. We know that we can and will accomplish them. Most of all we understand how all the pieces of our life fit nicely together. The steps we take make sense to us and we take them with ease. We can see our way around, through, and over obstacles. We know when to wait and when to move. And we are grateful for every learning opportunity.

Positive psychologists call this flow. Athletes call it being in the zone. I call it harmony.

A few months ago, I listened to a webinar about how to find your soul’s purpose. The presenters talked about some of the things we often hear about connecting with our passion. But then there was a surprise; one presenter said that everything we do in our lives supports our purpose. He said that all the tasks we engage in help us to fulfill our soul’s purpose, including sweeping the floor.

If you’re like me, laundry is not on the top of your list. Maybe loading the dishwasher or vacuuming or downsizing your closet is your least favorite task. Considering these tasks as essential to being the person we came to the world to be might seem like a big leap. But the idea held promise for me. I mean I can use a little something to put some magic into sweeping or doing laundry. So, this presenter had my attention.

He encouraged listeners to think about how sweeping our floor, caring for our home or other seemingly mundane tasks are related to our life purpose. Since that webinar, I’ve also heard Chalene Johnson and Dee Marshall talk about the importance of making your environment conducive to accomplishing your goals.

As I thought about these talks, I realized that these are the same ideas I share with young people making decisions about college. A mythology class might seem really useless until you’re in an interview with a potential employer who has artwork related to your course. Or you listen to a myth and it offers a solution to a problem you’re facing.

These experiences remind me of the power of harmony. Every moment of our lives is relevant to us being who we came to the world to be. Nothing is wasted. I mean really, I’ve got a new perspective on laundry and sweeping.

So, next time you’re doing something you don’t like or you’re procrastinating and trying to get the energy to do it, use this strategy:

Connect it to your truth, fulfilling your purpose.

Order your steps to complete the task.

Focus & balance your use of resources.

Notice the gifts you receive and be grateful for your experience.

Enjoy the harmony ‘cause mmmm, this feels right.
